Pre and Post natal treatment
Prenatal and postnatal pelvic floor physiotherapy plays a crucial role in supporting women through the stages of pregnancy and postpartum recovery.
Prenatal Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy: During pregnancy, hormonal changes and the growing weight of the baby can put significant strain on the pelvic floor muscles. A physiotherapist can help expectant mothers understand how to maintain pelvic floor health, teach techniques to strengthen these muscles, and provide guidance on posture and body mechanics. Strategies may include pelvic floor muscle exercises, relaxation techniques, and education on how to manage changes in the body. This proactive approach can help reduce the risk of incontinence and pelvic pain during and after pregnancy. Exercises and stretches to prepare the body for labour, including perineal massage are included.
Postnatal Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy: After childbirth, many women experience changes in pelvic floor function due to the physical demands of pregnancy and delivery. Postnatal physiotherapy focuses on restoring pelvic floor strength and function. A physiotherapist will assess the recovery progress and may offer specific exercises to strengthen weakened muscles, improve coordination, and address any issues such as diastasis recti or urinary incontinence. It is also an opportunity to discuss any discomfort or concerns the mother may have. A 6 week check up is advised.
